HONOLULU – Stanford produced two opposite performances in back-to-back games to earn a split during the opening day of the Malihini Aloha Tournament.
The Cardinal (8-8) dropped its opening contest 8-3 against Coastal Carolina but rebounded quickly to secure a dominating 13-4 victory against Hawai’i. Stanford found itself in an early hole after Coastal Carolina opened the game with a pair of back-to-back singles before Noad hit a three-run home run to take a 3-0 lead. The Chanticleers continued to threaten but Haley Snyder (4-4) did well to pitch out of the jam.
Snyder went 5.0 innings and permitted five runs on eight hits and one walk with one strikeout.
The Cardinal got two runs back immediately in the following frame when Lauren Bertoy reached on an error and Sorenson capitalized with a moon-shot home run to cut Coastal Carolina’s lead to 3-2.
The Chanticleers doubled its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning when Mackenzie Conrad hit a solo home run to right field. Coastal Carolina extended its lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth when the leadoff runner reached base and the Chanticleers moved her around the bases.

Hawai’i capitalized on a Stanford error in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Cardinal’s lead in half, 2-1.
The teams traded three-spots in the fourth inning. Stanford loaded the bases with no outs and capitalized on two Hawai’i errors to extend its lead to 5-1. Hawai’i responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning to close the gap to 5-4.
Stanford continued to produce runs, generating two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Jessica Plaza hit a two-out two-RBI double to the right-center field gap to increase the Cardinal’s lead to 7-4.
Sorenson hit her second two-run home run on the day to give Stanford a 9-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning. She hit a towering blast to deep left field, landing well beyond the fence.
The Cardinal added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Molly Fowkes opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Victoria Molina. Sorenson followed with a three-run blast to left-center field that would have traveled well beyond the fence had there not been a protective netting behind that portion of the fence.
Lee retired three of the four batters in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Stanford continues play Saturday with another set of games against Coastal Carolina (2 p.m.) and Hawaii (4:30 p.m.)
