HONOLULU – Kayla Bonstrom hit a two-out RBI-double in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off Coastal Carolina, 8-7, Sunday and extend Stanford’s winning streak to four games.
With the game knotted at 7-7, Whitney Burks singled with two outs to bring Bonstrom to the plate. Bonstrom smoked a double to the left-center field gap and Burks hustled around the bases and beat the throw home for the game-winning run.
The Cardinal (11-8) finished the weekend 4-1 with two wins against Coastal Carolina (8-11) and Hawai’i (12-8). Stanford’s offense exploded for 50 runs, 41 hits, 12 home runs and nine doubles over five games on the weekend.
Bonstrom paced Stanford offensively, hitting .412 (7-for-17) with six RBIs, four doubles, a home run and seven runs. Kylie Sorenson and Whitney Burks also had big weekends at the plate. Sorenson hit .389 (7-for-18) with three home runs, while Burks hit .385 (5-for-13) with a double and a home run.
Lauren Frost provided plenty of power for the Cardinal with three home runs and a 1.083 slugging percentage on the weekend.
Carolyn Lee went 3-0 in the circle to improve her record to 6-4 on the year, while Haley Snyder (5-5) picked up a victory against Hawai’i. Lee limited opponents to 15 runs on 26 hits and eight walks, and racked up 16 strikeouts.
Lee (6-4) got the start in the circle and registered a career-high seven strikeouts. She threw her eighth complete game of the season, permitting seven runs – five earned – on 11 hits and three walks.
Stanford found itself in an early hole when Morgan Noad hit a one-out two-run home run to center field to give Coastal Carolina a 2-0 lead.
The Chanticleers capitalized on a pair of Stanford errors later in the inning to extend their lead to 4-0. Alvino hit a bloop single into shallow left field. Sorenson overthrew Lauren Frost at second base allowing the runner on third to advance home and the runner on first take off for second. Bonstrom picked up the ball and overthrew the second baseman as well and the ball sailed into deep center field allowing Alvino to make her way home.
Stanford quickly erased the deficit with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame. Whitney Burks got the rally going with a double down the right field line. She was brought home in the following at-bat when Kayla Bonstrom hit a ground-rule double to left-center field.
After Jessica Plaza walked, Victoria Molina hit a three-run home run to center field to knot the game at 4-4.
Coastal Carolina took a 6-4 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by Kelsey Dominik. The Chanticleers continued to threaten and loaded the bases with one out but Lee struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Stanford took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the third inning when Lauren Frost hit a three-run home run to left field to put the Cardinal up 7-6. It was Frost’s third home run on the weekend. She registered a two-run home run, three-run home run and a grand slam on the weekend.
The lead did not last long, however, as Coastal Carolina’s Noad hit her second home run of the day – a solo shot to left field – to knot the game at 7-7.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. Burks singled to right field and was brought home in the following at-bat by Bonstrom who doubled to left-center field. Burks sped around the bases from first and beat the throw home for the game winning run.
Stanford returns home next weekend for its final regular season tournament the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic. The Cardinal will take on Cal Poly, Tulsa and Florida State.
