MALIBU, Calif. – After a come-from-behind win in the opening set, the No. 3 Stanford men’s volleyball team rolled to a 32-30, 25-22, 25-17 sweep over No. 10 Pepperdine, Sunday, at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Cardinal has won a season-high eight straight matches.

Trailing 24-22 in the first set, a kill by senior Madison Hayden and an ace from senior Conrad Kaminski tied the set 24-24. The teams traded points until kills by Kaminski and redshirt sophomore Kevin Rakestraw shut the door on the Waves.

There were 28 tie scores and nine lead changes in the first set. The Cardinal recorded 21 kills on a .457 attack percentage, while the Waves had 19 kills on .394 hitting. Stanford has now won the opening set in all 17 matches this season.

Stanford picked up its nine sweep of the season by hitting .432 as a team, while putting down seven aces and collecting 10.0 blocks. Pepperdine, which entered the week as the nation’s leader in blocks per set (3.26), registered just 6.0 blocks against the Cardinal, while hitting .312 for the match.

Hayden led Stanford offensively with 11 kills, hitting .391. Redshirt junior opposite Gabriel Vega added nine kills (.368), four digs and three blocks. Both middles, Kaminski and Rakestraw, tallied eight kills and five blocks for the Cardinal. Kaminski also had a match-high three aces, while Rakestraw turned in two.

Senior setter James Shaw controlled the offense with 38 assists, his most in a three-set match this season, and posted six digs, five blocks and three kills. Freshman Jordan Ewert totaled six kills and three digs, while sophomore libero Evan Enriques finished with six digs.

Pepperdine was led by redshirt senior Matt Tarantino’s match-high 15 kills. Colby Harriman and David Wieczorek each had 10 kills apiece. Setter Joshua Stewart totaled 40 assists.

Stanford and Pepperdine will square off again on Saturday, March 12 in Maples Pavilion. The match is slated for 4 p.m. PT and will be televised on Pac-12 Bay Area.
