About us

About us

The National Archives is the official archive of the UK Government. We help government departments manage their information more effectively and promote the re-use of public sector information. This work helps inform today's decisions and ensures that they become tomorrow's permanent record.

We also lead on developing cutting edge preservation techniques for records of any format, from parchment to digital, and advise others on the care of archives.

We hold 11 million records - from Domesday Book to the most recent government papers. Whatever your research interests, whether professional, academic or personal, we have documents that will bring you closer to history as it happened.
