This examination will test the candidate’s ability to translate accurately into English prose a passage of Latin prose and a passage of Latin poetry. The passages will be selected from the following authors: Caesar, Cicero, Livy, Nepos, Pliny (for prose); Catullus, Martial, Ovid, Tibullus, Vergil (for poetry).

The exam will consist of four Latin passages, two each of prose and of poetry. Each passage will be approximately 15-20 lines in length. You will choose one passage from each category to translate as literally as possible within the bounds of good English prose.

A dictionary such as Lewis & Short or the Oxford Latin Dictionary will be allowed during the examination.

The purpose of this examination is to establish that you are able to translate a passage of Latin that you might encounter in the course of your research.

If you are planning to take the exam, please contact the examiner John Klopacz, at 724-3352 or at jklopacz@stanford.edu. His office is in Building 110-110.
