The first-ever UN emergency health mission, the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) was set up in response to the unprecedented outbreak. The Mission is temporary and responds to immediate needs related to the fight against Ebola, which has been reported in more than 25,516 people and killed 10,573 as of 7 April 2015, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The world has met the Millennium Development Goal target of halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water, well in advance of the 2015 deadline, according to UNICEF and the World Health Organization. Between 1990 and 2010, over two billion people gained access to improved drinking water sources, such as piped supplies and protected wells.
