This year's theme is Facing Our Truths: From Reflection to Action. In January the Listen to the Silence conference explored different ways that our community engages our history, our identity, and our future. Our aim is to take these lessons and put them into practice.
This API Heritage Month, we want to examine the struggles we share both within our community and beyond it. By sharing our stories, we can acknowledge the issues that we face, unite behind them, and galvanize our community. Fresh Off the Boat has been groundbreaking for Asian American representation because it has presented nuanced realities of one Taiwanese-American family. However, rather than settling for the show’s success, it is important to recognize the opportunities this success brings to Asian Americans for further growth. Through sharing our diverse stories, we highlight our shared struggles.
When we say “Facing Our Truths,” we are asking, “How can we come to terms with the traumas of our community, and how do we move forward? What are ways that we can be in solidarity with other communities? How do we celebrate and uplift the beauty and strength in our collective histories and futures?” This year, issues like affirmative action and Peter Liang’s indictment have divided our community but it’s time to join together and take action.
