David is a McColl Family Fellow. He is a California native from Santa Cruz and an alumnus of Aptos High School. He went on to complete his undergraduate degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford. Both his graduate work and industry experience with Intuitive Surgical and Hansen Medical were in the area of surgical robotics.
Most recently, David was a postdoctoral fellow at UCSF studying the physics of breast cancer progression.
David has returned to Stanford where he served a time as a Biodesign Innovation Fellow before assuming his role as an Assistant Professor of Bioengineering where he teaches Biodesign to undergraduates and is pursuing research in smart medical devices.
