James was born in London, England and immigrated to the United States at a young age, attending high school in Mobile, Alabama. He went on to attend Tulane University where he received an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Following college, he was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine. During medical school, he co-wrote a business plan that received semi-finalist honors at the Wharton business plan competition. The plan became a startup company, which he developed through the Wharton Venture Initiation Program. After completing medical school, James moved on to a General Surgery residency training program at the University of California San Francisco. He has completed three of five years in the surgical program and will be taking a two year break from clinical duties to pursue his interest in medical device development through the Stanford Biodesign and Innovation program. His clinical interest is in the field of cardiac and thoracic surgery. His academic interests to date include the modulation of energy to create specific tissue effects in the operating room, the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in end-stage lung disease, and the use of radioisotope mapping in surgical oncology.
