Recreation Classes Announcements:
- Registration for our 2016 Spring Quarter Recreation Classes open on March 15, 2016 at 9:00 a.m.
Overview:
These are non-credit classes provided by Stanford Recreation. The goal of the Recreation Class Program is to provide participants with professional instruction in a safe and fun workout and learning environment. Please note that there is no BeWell rate for golf classes.
Eligibility:
Stanford students, Faculty/Staff and Stanford Community are eligible to participate in Recreation Classes. Stanford Community members are Dependents 18 and older, Spouses, Hospital Employees who have purchased an Athletic Access Card, Alums who have purchased an Alumni Membership, Retirees, or Partners of a Student, Faculty or Staff.

Golf
Beginning:
Learn the fundamentals of grip, stance, alignment & posture. We will cover all basic aspects the student will need to play nine holes. We will introduce putting, chipping full & partial swing. The basic rules and etiquette will be covered also.
Advanced Beginning:
Previous experience required either beginning golf or some basic knowledge. Refine the golf swing with our focus on learning how the ball flight laws effect where the ball goes. Work on developing a more consistent and repeatable golf swing with an emphasis on the impact position. Discuss swing plane and path and how these effect where the golf ball goes.
Intermediate:
Take your game to the next level an emphasis will be placed on learning how to improve your ability to score. The short game will be a major focus in this class. Students will be encouraged to play on the golf course and bring scorecards to their instructor. We will discuss how to hit different shots high, low, right to left and left to right.

Golf clubs will be provided for participants if needed

Tennis
Tennis classes will cover rules, technique, and general play. Learn and develop skills by playing with other participants of similar skill level.
Beginning: This course will focus on teaching the following skills: Forehand, backhand, serve, and net play; rules and scoring
Intermediate: This course is designed to review the fundamental strokes and their use in a game situation along with singles and doubles tactics. Prerequisite: average ability in fundamental strokes, and regular playing experience; NTRP rating of 3.0 or equivalent.
Advanced: This course focuses on drills that emphasize footwork, serve and return, approach shots, volleys, lobs, and overheads. Student will also learn strategies for competition in singles and doubles. Prerequisite: above average strokes and game playing ability; NTRP equivalent rating of 4.0 or above.
Note: Non-marking tennis shoes are required for class.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own racquets. There will be a few available to borrow.

Squash
Learn how to play squash safely and effectively by learning the tactics, technique and rules of this fast-paced, exciting game! Racquets, balls, and eye protection are provided, non-marking shoes are requested.

Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga yoga will be taught in the Mysore style by Russell Case, authorized Level II Instructor by Pattabhi Jois and the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore India. Mysore is a guided self practice. This is a personal teaching style designed for your background in yoga. All skill levels are welcome and this is an open studio and available for participants to drop in at their convenience between 11am- 1pm.

Gymnastics
Learn the basic fundamentals of Gymnastics. This class will introduce participants to all gymnastics apparatus; Floor Exercise, Vault, High Bar, Uneven Bars, Trampoline, Rings, Tumble Track, Pommel Horse, Balance Beam and Parallel Bars. Instruction will include flexibility, strength, tumbling basics, fundamental on all apparatus and basic spotting. Prerequisites: Willingness to work hard at things that may be scary or difficult and that require some strength and flexibility. No prior gymnastics experience is required.
