David Kelley is the founder and chairman of the global design firm IDEO and the founder of Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, also known as the d.school. Stanford’s Donald W. Whittier Professor in Mechanical Engineering, Kelley's primary interest is in championing human-centered design methodology, the culture of innovation, design-thinking and creative confidence in both business and education.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, Kelley first worked as an engineer at both Boeing and NCR. Drawn to design, he entered Stanford University in 1975 , where he earned his master’s degree in Engineering/Product Design. In 1978 he began teaching at Stanford and he founded the design firm that would become IDEO. He also founded an early-stage venture-capital firm called Onset in 1984 and helped start a special effects firm called Edge Innovations which creates Animatronics for the film industry.
Kelley is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He holds honorary PhD's from both the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth and Art Center College in Pasadena. He has been acknowledged with numerous design awards including The Chrysler Design Award, The National Design Award from the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, The Sir Misha Black Medal for his “distinguished contribution to design education”, The Robert Fletcher Award from Dartmouth and The Edison Achievement Award. A frequent speaker about design thinking and the culture of innovation, Kelley and his brother Tom co-authored the New York Times best-selling book "Creative Confidence.”
