Personal bio
William Gilly received a BSE in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 1972 and PhD in Physiology and Biophysics from Washington University in1978. After postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania, he assumed his current faculty position in the Department of Biology at Hopkins Marine Station. His trajectory from engineering to physiology to field biology and ecology has followed squid on a long exploration of evolving ideas. During the course of his training, Gilly valued most the close working relationships he shared with mentors, and he tries to incorporate this into his teaching programs through lab- and field-work courses. Humanities and the natural sciences are two sides of the same coin, and much of his teaching efforts are focused on bringing students from disparate disciplines together to expand their vision of connections and complexity in the living world.
