Goodman Surgical Education Center

Letter from the Director

This year has seen a tremendous amount of growth for the Goodman Simulation Center. As we continue to expand our educational programs, we have changed our name to the Goodman Surgical Education Center (GSEC), to more accurately portray the goals and scope of our efforts. As an American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institute (ACS AEI), we enjoy the benefits of being an integral part of the growing medical education community at Stanford School of Medicine.

Although our name has changed, the core values of the GSEC remain the same: great teaching style (curricular and individual style), formal medical education training, impactful research, and collaborations with the broader medical education community. The backbone of the GSEC is our Surgical Education Fellowship (SEF), a two-year fellowship that provides a comprehensive and robust training to prepare fellows for leadership positions in surgical education.

We remain committed to exceptional training for general surgery residents and medical students, through innovative skills sessions and blended learning curricula. In the past year, we have introduced a new Surgery Capstone course to prepare medical students for internship and collaborated with the Surgery Interest Group at Stanford to create workshops and networking sessions. To reach first and second year medical students interested in surgery, we also teach an advanced suturing course (Surgery 205) for pre-clinical students to gain technical and cognitive skills. In conjunction with the departments of Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine, we have co-founded the Medical Education Scholars Program to provide monthly faculty development seminars on core health professions educational topics.

The Surgical Education Fellows and the faculty of the GSEC have become regular presenters, workshop leads, and discussants at national conferences. The ACS Clinical Conference, Surgical Education Week, ACS AEI consortium and post graduate conferences, and the conference for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare are but a few.

The GSEC is ever growing in scope and depth, with the ongoing commitment to improve every facet of surgical education at Stanford.  We are proud of what we have built and excited to forge new paths in education and learning.
