Remote presence is a rapidly evolving field, bringing new, richer, and more human interaction to people communicating over long distances. In this talk, I will discuss the past, present, and future of remote presence technology, with a focus on our development of the Beam system at Suitable Technologies. I'll describe the results of internal and external field studies on Beam, and some of the surprising things we've found in its adoption and usage. Finally, I'll present our principles of remote presence -- guidelines crafted from our studies and experimentation about what it takes to truly feel "there."

Josh directs software development, user experience, and interface design at Suitable Technologies.

He is a founding member of the company from Willow Garage where he researched, designed, and developed user interfaces for both personal robot and remote presence devices. Previously, he led front-end development at Zvents (acquired by eBay), and spent several years researching human-computer interaction and social networks at HP Labs and Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). Josh holds a M.S. in computer science from Stanford and a B.S. in computer science from Washington University.
