Beyond Bullying

The Heroic Imagination Project’s “Beyond Bullying” workshop is a groundbreaking approach to addressing the most prominent social challenges that students face, both in and out of school. These include but are not limited to: bullying, peer pressure, intergroup conflict, and school violence.

At its core, “Beyond Bullying” focuses on how students can become more skillful and effective in turning these challenging into opportunities for positive social change through sharing with you our  unique method called “Situational Awareness.”

What is “situational awareness”?  And how can it be aan effective tool in counteracting bullying and school violence?   We believe that bullying is a consequence of a greater issue: the lack of understanding of ourselves and others in today’s society, as well as the social dynamics that affect us all. While it’s important for teachers and parents to stay informed and involved, the critical element is for students to be able to activate and transform group tendencies from ones of automaticity and apathy to ones of mindfulness and initiative. As a result, they will not only be able to better respond to challenging situations, they’ll be able to take an active role in preventing such situations from happening in the first place.

In this workshop, students learn that:

- Our tendency to be blind to situational dynamics is normal, but can be changed by increasing our awareness and being able to pause before acting automatically.

- In group situations where something needs to be done, one must be ready to be the first to take action, since there’s no guarantee that someone else will take care of it.

- Conformity and group behavior can influence us in unwanted ways, but can also be used to transform school culture in positive ways.

- All of these involve skills that can be learned, practiced, and improved by anyone.
