Overview
Founded by Act of Parliament in 1953, the British Marshall Scholarships commemorate the “human ideals” of the European Recovery Programme (Marshall Plan). The Scholarships are intended to express the gratitude of the British people to the American people for the Marshall plan by encouraging “intellectually distinguished young Americans who will one day become leaders, opinion formers and decisions makers...” to study for a degree in the United Kingdom.
The Award
Each year, up to forty Marshall Scholarships are awarded for two years of study in any British university and in any discipline (either at undergraduate or graduate level) leading to the award of a British university degree. The total award value of a Marshall Scholarship will vary according to circumstances (selected university, residence, etc.), but will include payment of tuition fees, personal allowance, grant for books, and travel expenses.
Who is an ideal candidate?
“In appointing Marshall scholars the selectors will look for distinction of intellect and character as evidenced both by their scholastic attainments and by their other activities and achievements. Preference will be given to candidates who combine high academic ability with the capacity to play an active part in the life of the United Kingdom university to which they go, and to those who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their society.”
The Marshall selection committee is looking for certain criteria in the candidates, this includes: Academic Merit, Leadership Potential, and Ambassadorial Potential.

Eligibility
Those who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply for Marshall Scholarships:
- Citizen of the U.S.
- Age: There is no age limit, but applicants must apply within two years of finishing their first undergraduate four-year degree
- Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the U.S. (by the time the scholarship commences)
- Applicants must have a grade point average of NOT LESS THAN 3.7 (or A-) for their entire undergraduate career
All Stanford students currently enrolled MUST apply through the ORC. Recent graduates can either be endorsed through the university process or by their employer. If you choose to be endorsed by your employer, services available at the ORC will be limited.
