The Chinese Typewriter: The Design and Science of East Asian Information Technology

During the 19th and 20th centuries, groundbreaking information technologies like the telegraph, the typewriter, and the computer changed the world. All of these technologies were designed with the alphabet in mind, however, leaving open the question: what about China, Japan, and Korea? In this exhibition, the history of modern East Asian information technology is explored through artifacts from the personal collection of Professor Thomas S. Mullaney (History) and the Stanford East Asia Library. Opening Reception and Guest Lectures by Jidong Yang (EAL) and Thomas S. Mullaney (History) on Wednesday, January 20 at 5pm.

The exhibition is open from January 20, 2016 to September 10, 2016.

Conference on rare primary sources will be held in East Asia Library

On July 1-2, 2015, the East Asia Library of Stanford University Libraries will host an academic conference titled Beyond the Book: A Conference on Unique and Rare Primary Sources for East Asian Studies Collected in North America. The conference will bring librarians, archivists, and scholars from all over North America to present research papers on less-known materials, mostly in non-book formats. It is our hope that, through the conference, we will draw scholarly attention to those scattered yet valuable resources for East Asian Studies.

The two-day conference will kick off on 8:45am, July 1, 2015, at the Bishop Auditorium that is located on the first floor of the Lathrop Library. East Asia Library's new hours!

Beginning from next week, February 2, the East Asia Library will have longer hours during the academic year. For the first time the library will open on Saturdays from 9am to 5pm. Since the library moved to its current location at Lathrop, user traffic has increased greatly, thanks to its attractive physical environment and ample study spaces. Saturday hours are expected to give users even better access to the library's collections and facilities.

Evening hours will also be extended, from 9pm to 10pm Monday to Thursday. Specific hours during the academic year are:

Monday - Thursday: 9am-10pm

Friday: 9am-6pm

Saturday: 9am-5pm

Sunday: 1pm-9pm

Join us: Opening Celebration of EAL on Oct. 1, 4pm-6pm

The East Asia Library, now in its new home at Lathrop Library, will have an opening celebration on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. With three floors of open stacks, an on-site special collection, siminar and teaching rooms and ample study spaces, the library has already been attracting much footprint since it opened on September 15.

The celebration will start at 4pm, to be kicked off by Stanford Taiko performance. There will also be performances by Stanford Wushu and Stanford Hwimori. If you are a tea lover, the tea ceremony will give you a great opportunity to enjoy teas from all around China. Library tours and light refreshments will be provided.

Please come join us for the celebration and the fun!

Festivities will take place at the base of the grand staircase on Lasuen Mall. It is located outside of the Lathrop Library, directly east of the Oval on Palm Drive, and adjacent to Memorial Hall.
