In his first Stanford performance since 2011’s sold-out Schubert recital, Emanuel Ax turns his prodigious talent to the work of Beethoven—including the beloved “Pathétique” sonata—and Chopin. One of the preeminent pianists in the world for nearly four decades, Ax has received numerous awards and honors, including Grammys for his recordings (with Yo-Yo Ma) of the Beethoven and Brahms sonatas for piano and cello. As the New York Times described the breadth of Ax’s artistry in concert: “[He] played with youthful brio, incisive rhythm, bountiful imagination, delicacy when called for and thundering power when the piano fought back.”

Beethoven: Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op.2 No. 2 (1795); Beethoven: Sonata No. 8 in c minor, Op.13 “Pathetique” (1798); Chopin: Sonata No.3 in b minor, Op.58 (1844)
