Understanding our Biases and Assumptions  

Jo Handelsman, PhD, presents a summary of the substantial body of research on unconscious bias and assumptions in the academic hiring and promotion process. Handelsman is Associate Director for Science at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and former Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale University.

Fresh Perspectives on Diversity

Ruth J. Simmons, PhD, President of Brown University from 2001-2012, speaks at Stanford Medicine’s Fresh Perspectives on Diversity Dean’s Lecture Series. A French professor before entering university administration, President Simmons held an appointment as a Professor of Africana Studies at Brown. After completing her PhD in Romance Languages and literatures at Harvard, she served in various faculty and administrative roles at the University of Southern California, Princeton University, and Spelman College before becoming president of Smith College, the largest women’s college in the United States. At Smith, she launched a number of important academic initiatives, including an engineering program, the first at an American women’s college.
