Diversity and Inclusion

Stanford Neurology strongly believes in the value of diversity in our training program and we are focused on recruiting and supporting individuals from all backgrounds. We support a number of opportunities for those under-represented in medicine and are continuing to expand our efforts in diversity and inclusion led by Dr. Reena Thomas.

Funded visitor clerkships

These opportunities are for Senior medical students from groups that have been traditionally under-represented in medicine to have a month-long clinical experience at Stanford. Our goal is to highlight all that the Stanford Neurology residency training program has to offer, including world-class clinical education and varied case exposure from all subspecialties, state-of-the art clinical and research technology and innovation, a warm and welcoming community, and career mentorship wherever your interests may lie.


International medical student applications

We accept applications from international medical school graduates holding a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and a Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter (PTAL) from the Medical Board of California. Having had hands-on recent clinical experience in the U.S. is mandatory. The application process is extremely competitive. Only those with exceptional credentials are invited for interview.

Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians

Stanford University will be hosting a conference on Saturday, January 13, 2018 entitled Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP).  The mission is to help diverse medical students and residents become aware of academic medicine as a career option and to provide them with the resources to further explore and potentially embark on an academic medicine career. 


The Diversity Center of Representation & Empowerment (C.O.R.E.)

This new center on campus is located on the ground floor of Lane Library and will officially open in the fall of 2017.

Mission of the Diversity CORE:

The Stanford School of Medicine (SOM) Diversity Center of Representation and Empowerment (C.O.R.E), established in a visible location on campus to highlight the importance of its existence, will demonstrate that supporting trainees of underrepresented backgrounds is a priority to the SOM. All medical and graduate trainee groups serving the needs of underrepresented minorities will share ownership of the community center, and the space will be open to all trainees in the SOM community. This will be a physical space for community members who want and need to celebrate their identity and serves to connect trainees, build community, and reduce isolation. We envision this space will be an environment that appreciates the multicultural aspects of identity, fosters inclusion, and provides cultural, social, and educational experiences through conversation. This space will be staffed by personnel with a demonstrated commitment to supporting the diverse student population at our institution.
