Grant to evaluate Russian project

Researchers from the Stanford Center for Innovations in Learning and the Distance Learning Laboratory at the Russian Academy of Education have received a $275,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The funding will be used to evaluate a distance-learning program launched three years ago by the Institute for International Studies and a consortium of Russian universities. Through the program, students in Russia participate in a course called Security, Civil Liberties and Terrorism with Stanford professors. Researchers will measure the effects of the program on the students' ability to think, write and argue critically. The project team also will evaluate related aspects of exporting social science curricula internationally.
