Annual 'Stressed-Out Students' conference begins Friday

The fifth annual "Stressed-Out Students" conference will open at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 in Dinkelspiel Auditorium with a panel discussion featuring nationally renowned child development experts and authors. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature:

  • David Elkind, author of The Hurried Child, Ties that Stress and The Power of Play;
  • Kenneth Ginsburg, author of A Parent's Guide to Building Resilience in Children and Teens and a pediatrician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia;
  • Madeline Levine, author of The Price of Privilege and a clinical psychologist;
  • Denise Clark Pope, author of Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed-Out, Materialistic and Miseducated Students and a lecturer in the Stanford School of Education.
  • The discussion kicks off a Sept. 26-27 conference, "Stress-Out Students: Helping to Improve Health, School Engagement and Academic Integrity," designed to address the rising concern that adolescents are often compromising their mental and physical health, personal values and commitment to learning as they try to contend with the pressure for high achievement in American schools.

    Space is limited for the panel discussion. Those planning to attend should let the event organizers know by e-mailing info@challengesuccess.org.

    On Sept. 27, a select number of middle school and high school teams—composed of students, teachers, principals, counselors and parents from the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, Chicago and Miami—will take part in workshops designed to help schools develop strategies to reduce academic stress and increase engagement with learning. These workshops are not open to the public.
