Seminar series to examine conflict, dispute resolution

STANFORD -- Conflict and dispute resolution will be the subject of a winter quarter seminar series sponsored by the Stanford University Center on Conflict and Negotiation.

The sessions - from 4:10 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays - will be held in room 290 of the Law School. The sessions are open to the public, and Stanford graduate students may elect a credit option. For more information, contact Richard Birke, associate director of the center, at 723-2574.

The speakers and topics are as follows:

Jan. 12: Stanford psychology Professor Lee Ross on "Construal, Conflict and Dispute Resolution";
Jan. 19: Stanford business Professor Robert Wilson on "Strategic Analysis of Litigation";
Jan. 26: Stanford law Professor Robert Mnookin on "Cooperation and Competition in the Litigation Setting";
Feb. 2: Stanford psychology Professor Claude Steele on "How Stereotypes Shape Group Achievement in American Schools";
Feb. 9: Stanford law Professor Ian Ayres on "Modeling the Cause of Race and Gender Discrimination";
Feb. 16: Cornell University economics Professor Robert Frank, who is a fellow this year at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, on "Winner-Take-All Markets";
Feb. 23: University of California-Berkeley statistics Professor David Freedman on "Ecological Repression and Voting Rights."

Topics and speakers for the March 2 and 9 sessions will be announced later.

The Stanford Center on Conflict and Negotiation was formed in 1988 to do basic research concerning barriers to the negotiated resolution of conflict. It also sponsors seminars, workshops and conferences on the subject for the general public, faculty, students and professionals in various fields of dispute resolution.
