Competition for Fulbright, related grants now open

STANFORD -- The annual competition for the Fulbright and related fellowships for 1997-98 is now open, officials in the Overseas Resource Center at the Bechtel International Center have announced.

The Fulbright and related grants program, administered by the Institute of International Education, is open to U.S. citizens who are seniors through doctoral candidates at the time of application. A total of approximately 800 awards in 75 countries around the world will be offered for 1997-98.

Fulbright and related programs offer the opportunity to study or conduct research in any academic discipline for six months to one year. The Fulbright Program also awards English teaching assistantships to France, Belgium/Luxembourg, Germany, Taiwan and South Korea.

The Overseas Resource Center, located on the second floor of the International Center, administers the campus competition for the Fulbright fellowships and several other grant programs. Information meetings will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 17; from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 25; and from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, May 6.

Information is also available on the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program, and the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the Bundeskanzler awards for study in Germany.

The campus deadline for applications for most of these awards is October 1996. More information and application materials can be obtained at the Overseas Resource Center. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The phone number is 725-0881.
