Sugarcane changes local temperature, researchers say

Sugarcane – a principal crop for biofuel – reduces the local air temperature compared to pasturelands or fields growing soybeans or maize, according to a new study from researchers at Stanford and the Carnegie Institution for Science. But sugarcane's effect on temperature is a "double-edged machete."

Eight Stanford scholars are among the 212 elected this year to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the country's most prestigious honorary societies and a leading center for independent policy research. Members contribute to academy studies in a range of disciplines.

British theater duo bring experimentation to drama faculty

Leslie Hill and Helen Paris, co-directors and founders of the British theater company Curious, have been collaborating on theatrical works for years. A recent production, "the moment I saw you I knew I could love you," was the pair's debut as associate professors in the Drama Department.
