New method detects emerging sunspots deep inside the sun

Sunspots spawn solar flares that can cause billions of dollars in damage to satellites, communications networks and power grids. But researchers have developed a way to detect incipient sunspots as deep as 65,000 kilometers, providing up to two days' advance warning of a solar flare.

Research engineer dedicated to energy efficiency dies

Lee Schipper, a senior research engineer at the Precourt Energy Efficiency Center who devoted his career to transport, energy efficiency and the environment, died Aug. 16 of pancreatic cancer. At Stanford, Schipper developed research and policy studies on efficient energy use in transportation.
