Geophysicist offers insight into the Virginia earthquake

The magnitude 5.8 earthquake that struck central Virginia on Tuesday was a rare event for the East Coast, but not a surprising one, according to Mark Zoback, a professor of geophysics. "This is an area where small earthquakes had occurred in the past and were well-documented," he said.

Apple executive, foundation head join Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees has elected Ronald Bruce Johnson, a senior vice president at Apple Inc., and Victoria "Vicky" Browne Rogers, president of The Rose Hills Foundation, to five-year terms that begin Oct. 10. Each earned an undergraduate degree at Stanford and has been active as a volunteer.
