Understanding the 'mental abacus' method of calculation

"Mental abacus" (MA) is an increasingly popular teaching tool that encourages visualization of a 400-year-old style of abacus known as a soroban. Research by psychologist Michael Frank suggests MA may represent one of the first known examples of non-language-based mental calculation.

When it comes to hitting a golf ball hard, researchers at the School of Medicine have identified several biomechanical factors that appear to separate the pros from the rest of us. The research team found that biomechanics among pros were consistent.

Kavli Institute researchers track binary black holes

Two scientists from the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology have been testing a method to look past the intense radiation pouring out of merging galaxy pairs to see the supermassive black holes at their cores. Their work will appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
