Researchers study the sound of pre-Incan conch shells

Archaeologists and acousticians have struck an unusual partnership to understand the role of conch shells in the temple culture around Peru's Chavín. Seed funding for the project came from the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts, a featured program of The Stanford Challenge.

In a 1936 Gallup Poll, only 30 percent of Americans said they would vote for a woman president if she were qualified for the job. By the late '90s, nearly 100 percent of Americans expressed a willingness to do so. Is it safe to say, then, that sexism is a thing of the past? Not quite.

  • Stanford Avenue sidewalk repairs: Starting today through approximately Thursday, Feb. 10, there will be one-lane traffic control on Stanford Avenue due to sidewalk repairs, as required by the City of Palo Alto.
