Orange Bowl goes to the Cardinal: Stanford 40, VA Tech 12

The number 12 may be a lucky number for Stanford's star quarterback, Andrew Luck, but it was not a good look for the Virginia Tech Hokies, who were trounced by the Cardinal football team Monday in the Discover Orange Bowl, 40 to 12. It was Stanford's first bowl win in 14 years.

In his 2010 Annual Report, President John Hennessy discusses how Stanford is transforming its campus to better position the university for the challenges of the future, while it returns to architect Frederick Law Olmsted's original vision. The report also updates progress on the university's initiatives.

Raindrops reveal how a wave of mountains moved south

Fifty million years ago, mountains began popping up in southern British Columbia. Over the next 22 million years, a wave of mountain building swept (geologically speaking) down western North America as far south as Mexico and as far east as Nebraska, according to Stanford geochemists.

  • Crime Alert: On Monday, Jan. 3, at 6:40 p.m., a female student reported being assaulted as she walked alone near Manzanita Field. An unidentified suspect came up behind her and placed his hand over her mouth. She tried to bite the suspect, who then fled. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male in his 40s wearing a dark hooded sweat jacket. He had a mustache or goatee, brown hair and a thin build. Anyone with information should contact the Stanford Police at (650) 329-2413. Individuals are encouraged to walk in pairs, use suggested travel routes, know the location of the emergency blue tower phones and carry a cell phone. More details on the Public Safety website.
