Christian McCaffrey for Heisman Trophy winner!
They say it’s tough for an athlete on the West coast—never mind one who is a running back—to win the Heisman Trophy, which recognizes the best player in college football whose performance exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. We’ll see about that.
Stanford’s astonishing star CHRISTIAN McCAFFREY is in the thick of the competition. Stanford Athletics has created a web page touting McCaffrey’s credentials. McCaffrey, for instance, leads the nation in all-purpose yards with 2,174, including 1,207 rushing yards. He averages 241.6 yards per game. He has caught 28 passes for 325 yards and gained 887 as a punt and kickoff returner. He even threw a touchdown pass during the Cardinal’s victory over Colorado.
The website, called WildCaff.com, also includes videos of his most memorable plays and quotes from people familiar with his performance so far this season.
For instance, writer Nick Groke of the Denver Post is quoted as saying, “Only two running backs in the past 15 years have won the Heisman Trophy, college football’s highest individual honor. Quarterbacks have dominated. But McCaffrey is more than a runner. He’s a Swiss Army knife back. He’ll run from a direct snap, block out of the shotgun, scramble on a read-option, line up in the slot.”
McCaffrey, who is a sophomore, is the son of two former Stanford athletes. Dad ED was a receiving star on the football team. Mom LISA played soccer.
The Heisman Trophy will be presented on Dec. 12 in New York City. Two recent Cardinal stars—ANDREW LUCK and TOBY GERHART—finished second in the balloting. JIM PLUNKETT is the only Stanford Cardinal to have won the coveted award.
