Holbrook Kohrt
It is with real sadness that I must share with you the news that our colleague Holbrook Kohrt died on February 24, 2016. Holbrook had been battling a serious illness all of his life, and in recent years had become resistant to standard Factor VIII therapy. He had been on investigational therapy for his disease, but became extremely ill and was transferred to Miami, where he died. Holbrook was, by everyone's estimation, one of the most brilliant translational researchers of his generation, and was poised to make great contributions to the conquest of cancer. His novel cancer immunotherapy preclinical work led directly to the development of clinical trials that may transform the care of cancer patients. His loss is a personal one for those of us who knew him, but also a real loss for cancer patients everywhere.
We will share with you more information regarding memorial services in coming days. Let us join in remembering a physician-scientist who bravely faced a life-threatening disease, never gave in, and gave his all in the service of cancer research and cancer patients.

Sigurdis Haraldsdottir, MD (assistant professor, Hematology/Oncology), is a recent (October 2015) newcomer to the Department of Medicine faculty. She is a native of Iceland, a fact that colors her professional interests as well as the ways she chooses to spend her free time.
