Bio

Mathieu will be joining the Department of Geological Sciences in the Fall of 2019 as an Assistant Professor. As a planetary geologist, he aims to unravel the physics of sedimentary and geomorphic processes that shape planetary surfaces (including Earth's), and to untangle what landforms and rocks tell us about past hydrology, climate, and habitability.

After completing an intensive two-year program in physics and chemistry (Classe Préparatoire au Grandes Écoles) at the Lycée du Parc in Lyon, France, Mathieu enrolled at the École et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre in Strasbourg (EOST), France, where he received a BS in Geophysics (2009) and a Diplôme d’Ingénieur (MS) in Geophysical Engineering (2012). Mathieu also holds a MS in Environmental Science and Engineering (2011) from the University of Strasbourg. In 2012, Mathieu moved to the United States for graduate school at Caltech (MS in Planetary Science, 2014; PhD in Geology, 2017). In parallel with his PhD work, Mathieu was part of the NASA Mars Science Laboratory science and operations team that operate the Curiosity rover at the surface of Mars. In the Fall of 2017, Mathieu joined Harvard University as a John Harvard Distinguished Science Fellow.
