Stan Duvall:
Redefining the Triple Threat
Professional Certificate in Stanford Advanced Computer Security, Advanced Project Management and Strategic Decision and Risk Management
"It is worth the effort. Coming out of a program, you have a new way of approaching problems... new skills and a new mentality."
Dedicating his life to service and helping others discover their journey is what inspires him. The more he knows, the more he can contribute is the way he views it. That's what this three-time professional program participant is teaching us about lifelong learning.
Why did you choose the Stanford Center for Professional Development for continuing your education?
I chose it primarily for the quality of programs and faculty. The decision to pursue the Stanford Strategic Decision and Risk Management Certificate Program was based on: 1) curriculum on how to influence the way my organization makes decisions and 2) the opportunity to learn Decision Analysis from the founder of the field, Ron Howard.
Having the flexibility to choose the delivery format was also really beneficial–attending courses at Stanford allowed for focused effort and a great learning experience, while attending courses online allowed for timely completion and ease of coordination with work and family commitments.
What was your favorite course from the Stanford Strategic Decision and Risk Management Program?
I enjoyed the crossover course, Converting Strategy into Action. It is applicable to both the Stanford Strategic Decision and Risk Management and Advanced Project Management program, which I’m currently enrolled in and it is a “must do.”
Similarly, learning Decision Analysis from Ron Howard was priceless.
What made you decide to pursue other professional certifications with Stanford?
Although I teach courses in cyber security, I pursued the Stanford Advanced Computer Security Certificate to complement my existing knowledge. Dan Boneh and the faculty team of the online program provide a comprehensive overview of the entire field. The material was a great refresher and covered everything from the basics to emerging threats. Taking courses online, I found it helpful to be able to study the material at my own pace.
How has what you learned helped you in your career?
I use the tools and techniques from the Stanford Strategic Decision and Risk Management Certificate Program to analyze which programs and policies my organization pursues. The six-course program was time and money well spent, and the skill set gained is equally as applicable in improving personal decision-making.
The Stanford Advanced Computer Security Program improved my abilities as a professor, both by supplementing my knowledge and affording me the opportunity to observe different teaching styles and their effect on student learning.
What advice would you give future participants to help them succeed in a Stanford program?
Programs for working professionals require a high level of discipline to complete. We have lives and careers to maintain while expanding our knowledge, skills and abilities. I found setting aside a dedicated time weekly was the best way to establish the habits I needed to complete the courses. It was worth the effort. Coming out of a program, you have a new way of approaching problems... new skills and a new mentality.
