What could a better commute do for you? Less stress, more exercise, and greater savings are just some of the reasons to consider a new commute. This spring, there are additional ways we will reward you for choosing a sustainable commute.

We would be glad to help you explore your alternative commute options. Request a free transit and/or bicycle commute plan through our do-it-yourself or custom commute planning service. You also can use our free ridematching services to find a Stanford affiliate with whom to carpool or vanpool.

Visit our 2013 Spring Promotion page for more information and to participate! If you have questions or comments, please contact us at commuteclub@stanford.edu or 650.736.9923.

Celebrate a healthy commute. May is National Bike Month, and Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 9. Get ready to ride by tuning-up your bike, joining a free class to learn bike safety tips or skills, entering our Bike Safety Pledge prize drawing, and rallying your department colleagues to ride, too!

Bike tune-up discount: The Campus Bike Shop is offering a full bike tune-up special, “Ride a Safe Bike,” ($65 value) for $50! This is a popular special that sells out quickly, and you must call in advance for an appointment: 650.723.9300. This offer ends on April 30.

Free Bike Safety Classes: Class attendees learn bike safety and the rules of the road and receive a voucher to purchase a $40 helmet for only $10 from the Campus Bike Shop. Except where noted, all Energizer Stations will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on May 9:

Bike to Work Day volunteers wanted! Volunteers are needed at our Energizer Stations to meet and greet riders with a smile, distribute goodies, and tally riders and walkers. 3) Stanford adds 10 new Zipcars and 4 new Zipcar locations

Zipcar offers $10 driving credit to Stanford members and a contest to win a free road trip + $500

Zipcars are now available at four new campus locations:

Another Zipcar also has been added to the three existing Zipcars at the Olmsted Road/Wellesley Street location. With these additions, Stanford now has 61 Zipcars at 23 locations. Visit our website for a full list of Zipcar locations at Stanford. If you are a car-free resident or use alternative transportation to get to campus, use a Zipcar if you need a car for errands or business!

Hourly-only Zipcars and $10 promotion code. Zipcar has added six hourly-only vehicles to the Stanford fleet so that members have better access to cars for shorter trips. Hourly-only Zipcars don’t have daily rates, so they are more likely to be available when you need a Zipcar for a quick, last-minute trip.

To mark the occasion, Zipcar is offering $10 in free driving to all Stanford members. Not yet a member? Join for $25 at zipcar.com/stanford and receive $35 in driving credit, plus an extra $10 in driving credit when you use the promo code bythehour. Already a member? Visit members.zipcar.com/gift/redeem to redeem the code for $10 in free driving.

Win a free road trip plus $500 in Zipcar’s Facebook contest. Throughout April, Zipcar is giving you the chance to hit the road for free with their Get Out and Zip contest. Tell Zipcar where your dream trip would take you. Each week, finalists will have their trips put to a vote, and the winner scores a free four-day reservation and $500 cash to spend along the way. To enter, visit the Get Out and Zip contest on the ZipcarU Facebook page.

Check out these additional promotions:

What is Zipcar? Zipcar at Stanford is a self-service, on-demand car sharing program for university and hospital employees and for Stanford students ages 18 and over. Zipcars can be accessed 24/7, and rates start at $7.50 per hour, including gas and insurance.

Whenever possible, all Stanford affiliates are encouraged to avoid departing campus during the peak commute times, which include departures from campus between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. If you have questions, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

Sustainable transportation is a great way to live healthier and to help protect the environment. Join Parking & Transportation Services (P&TS) at the Wellness Fair on April 18 and the Celebrating Sustainability Festival on April 22, Earth Day, to learn about healthy and sustainable commuting and other choices you could make!

This year’s Wellness Fair theme is “Summer Fun.” There will be fun activities, mini bike tune-ups, important health screenings, cooking demonstrations, massages, and giveaways. Participants are encouraged to walk, bike, or take Marguerite to the fair and can enter a raffle for a Cruiser bike and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk tickets.

On Earth Day, join us at the Celebrating Sustainability Festival. This interactive event offers food, live music, giveaways, and engaging activities and displays highlighting Stanford’s sustainability achievements along with actions individuals can take to reduce their environmental impact. Learn about energy, water, waste, food, transportation, and living green.

Test your bike repair skills with our Fix-a-Flat Challenge at 1 p.m. If you’re the fastest fixing a flat, you will win a $100 gift certificate to the Campus Bike Shop (plus, bragging rights, of course)!

To learn how to fix a flat, come to the Fix-A-Flat Clinic, 12:30 p.m. – 1 p.m., April 22, at the Celebrating Sustainability Festival (SEQ courtyard) or the SustainaSkillS Clinic, 3 p.m. – 4 p.m., May 17, at White Plaza, hosted by Students for a Sustainable Stanford.

We hope to see you there! If you have questions, contact us at commuteclub@stanford.edu.

1 It is important for Parking & Transportation Services to communicate parking and alternative-transportation information to the campus. Under the 2000 General Use Permit (campus growth plan approved by Santa Clara County), the campus has a goal of "no net new peak-hour commute trips" over the life of the permit and must accommodate campus growth with a limited number of new parking spaces. Failure to achieve this goal will result in the university being faced with costly mitigation measures.
