1) Apply online for 2013-14 parking permits

New permits are required on Sept. 1; order online to avoid long lines

It’s time to apply for 2013-14 parking permits. Current parking permits expire on Aug. 31. Permit holders need to display new parking permits as of Sept. 1, 2013 (2013-14 permit rates).

Before you purchase a parking permit, consider joining the Commute Club:

If you need to purchase a parking permit, avoid a trip to our office and the long lines associated with the new academic year. Order online for faster service through Will Call/Pick Up at our office.

If you request "U.S. Mail" delivery, allow 7 to 10 days to receive your permit. If you select "Pick Up," you will be notified when your permit is available, usually within 3 to 5 days. Commuting students: Please note that you cannot order a permit online or in person until our system is updated with your fall registration.

Online ordering is recommended, but here are all the options to apply:

  1. Order online (recommended)
  2. Fax your application: 650.724.8676
  3. Email your scanned application
  4. Apply in person or by mail: 340 Bonair Siding (Mail Code 7255), Stanford, CA 94305-7255

Our office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except university holidays. For more information, contact us at 650.723.9362 or transportation@stanford.edu.

2) Apply for the Commute Club or renew your membership to receive up to $300 per year

Eligible commuters who refrain from renewing a long-term parking permit could receive a $100 bonus

Join Stanford’s Commute Club (it’s free!), and you could receive up to $300 per year by biking, carpooling, taking transit, vanpooling, and/or walking instead of driving alone. If you are or were a Commute Club member, did you know that members need to renew their memberships every year?

Do you normally purchase a parking permit? Consider joining the Commute Club and participating in our Permit Non-Renewal Promotion. By not renewing your long-term permit, you could receive $100, $75, $50, or $25 in addition to up to $300 from the Stanford Commute Club! Need help planning a transit and/or bicycle commute? Try our do-it-yourself commute planning feature or request a custom commute plan from your front door to Stanford. To find Stanford affiliates with whom you could carpool or vanpool, try our free ridematching service.

Consider the many rewards of joining the Commute Club or renewing your free membership:

Whether you are joining or renewing, order online to enroll in the Commute Club for the 2013-14 academic year. Commuting students: Please note that you cannot enroll in the Commute Club online or in person until our system is updated with your fall registration.

3) Did you forget to enroll in the Commute Club for the current academic year?

Last chance for retroactive Clean Air Cash for 2012-13; must be requested by Aug. 26

Did you forget to enroll in the Commute Club last September, even though you were eligible during 2012-13? If so, please note that enrollment for the Commute Club can be processed only within the same academic year. This means you must apply by Monday, Aug. 26, to request retroactive Commute Club enrollment for all or part of the current academic year (September 2012 through August 2013). If you are unsure about your membership, visit My Commute Club to check your membership status.

If you are not currently enrolled and want to request retroactive Clean Air Cash and other rewards for this academic year, you must use a paper application (PDF) and submit it by Monday, Aug. 26, by fax (650.724.8676), by scanning and sending it by email, or by submitting it in person at 340 Bonair Siding.

If you currently are enrolled in the Commute Club and would like to request retroactive Clean Air Cash for previous months in which you should have been enrolled, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu. Let us know which previous months during this academic year you were eligible and request that we add those months to your membership. To check your membership status and months of enrollment, visit My Commute Club.

If you have questions, please contact us at commuteclub@stanford.edu.

4) Hoover Pavilion Garage to open on Sept. 3 with more than 1,000 parking spaces

Hoover Garage offers a new option for commuter parking

Hoover Pavilion Garage (Parking Structure 9) is expected to open on Sept. 3 at 217 Quarry Road at Hoover Pavilion, across from Stanford Shopping Center.

In light of increasingly limited parking capacity at the core campus, all Stanford commuters are encouraged to consider Hoover Garage as a potential parking option. If the parking area where you normally park is full, such as Parking Structure 5 and the Stock Farm lots, Hoover Garage could be a good alternative with more consistent parking availability coupled with Marguerite shuttle service.

Hoover Garage will offer more than 1,000 parking spaces, including ‘C’ commuter permit parking and 300 patient/visitor spaces. Commuters access the garage through the south entrance on Sweet Olive Way.

When Hoover Garage opens, Stanford’s free Marguerite shuttle will provide service between Hoover Pavilion and Stanford Medical Center via a revised Line MC route and a new Hoover Express route (Line H). The Marguerite stop for Hoover Pavilion will be near the steps on the north side of the building, facing Palo Road.

New Marguerite schedules, including Line H and revised Line MC, will be available the week of Aug. 26 on all buses, the Marguerite web page, and at Parking & Transportation Services. If you need assistance, please contact us at marguerite@stanford.edu or 650.724.9339.

5) Marguerite shuttle changes take effect on Sept. 2

Changes include new shuttle service for Hoover Pavilion

Stanford’s Marguerite shuttle service will offer new routes, serve new stops, and implement minor schedule changes for selected routes beginning Sept. 2. The following summarizes the changes, including new service to Hoover Pavilion:

New schedules will be available the week of Aug. 26 on all buses, the Marguerite web page, and at Parking & Transportation Services. If you need assistance, please contact us at marguerite@stanford.edu or 650.724.9339.

6) BART strike averted as state orders 60-day cooling-off period

Oct. 10 is the new negotiation deadline

Following a work stoppage in early July, BART continued operations under a temporary extension of union contracts. Contract negotiations are still ongoing, but a second potential strike has been averted after a California judge granted the governor’s request for a 60-day cooling-off period. Until Oct. 10, BART is operating its normal service while contract negotiations continue.

On Aug. 7, AC Transit announced that its management and union representatives have tentatively agreed to the terms of a new labor contract and that a potential strike has been averted.

For the latest updates and information, please use these resources:

Given the impact to commute traffic if there is a BART strike in October, P&TS encourages all commuters to plan ahead for transportation options and alternatives.

Visit the P&TS website for more information about transportation options and resources.

For assistance, please contact commuteclub@stanford.edu or 650.736.9923, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday (except university holidays).

1 It is important for Parking & Transportation Services to communicate parking and alternative-transportation information to the campus. Under the 2000 General Use Permit (campus growth plan approved by Santa Clara County), the campus has a goal of "no net new peak-hour commute trips" over the life of the permit and must accommodate campus growth with a limited number of new parking spaces. Failure to achieve this goal will result in the university being faced with costly mitigation measures.
