Water: Applications & Databases

Data and Information Technology

DMR Pollutant Loading Tool: The Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR) Pollutant Loading Tool is a new tool designed to help you determine who is discharging, what pollutants they are discharging and how much, and where they are discharging. The tool calculates pollutant loadings from permit and DMR data from EPA‘s Integrated Compliance Information System for the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (ICIS-NPDES) as well as data from EPA's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). Data is updated weekly from ICIS-NPDES and annually from TRI back to 2007. Pollutant loadings are presented as pounds per year and as toxic-weighted pounds per year to account for variations in toxicity among pollutants. The tool ranks dischargers, industries, and watersheds based on pollutant mass and toxicity, and presents “top ten” lists to help you determine which discharges are important, which facilities and industries are producing these discharges, and which watersheds are impacted.

Program Databases

Assessment Database Version 2 Explore a relational database application for tracking water quality assessment data, including use attainment, and causes and sources of impairment.

BEACON – See the results of beach monitoring conducted by state and local environmental and public health officials.

Clean Water Needs Survey (CWNS) – A comprehensive assessment of the capital needs required to meet the water quality goals set in the Clean Water Act.  The CWNS is conducted every four years by EPA and the states.

Drinking Water Data and Databases – EPA maintains drinking water data in several databases to help manage environmental programs and to provides public access to water quality data.

Electronic Notice of Intent (eNOI) – The eNOI system is a free online service for construction sites and industrial facilities that need to apply for coverage under EPA's Construction General Permit or Multi-Sector General Permit.

National Listing of Fish Advisories – The database includes information regarding state, territorial, tribal, and federally issued fish consumption advisories in the United States and Canada.

STORET – This data warehouse allows state environmental agencies, EPA and other federal agencies, universities, and private citizens to store and retrieve  water quality, biological, and physical data.

Water Contaminant Information Tool (WCIT) A secure, on-line database that provides information on chemical, biological, and radiological contaminants of concern for water security.

Water Quality Standards Database Provides access to EPA and state water quality standards (WQS) information in text, tables, and maps.

Water Quality Exchange A new framework that makes it easier for states, tribes, and others to submit and share water quality monitoring data over the Internet.

Mapping

Georeferencing – Allows you to locate and identify a surface water entity by determining its latitude and longitude.

NHDPlus (National Hydrology Dataset Plus) – An integrated suite of application-ready geospatial data sets.

WATERS (Watershed Assessment Tracking and Environmental Results) – An integrated information system that allows sharing of data in support of EPA's water quality efforts.

Water Quality Models

AQUATOX Predicts the fate of various pollutants and their effects on the ecosystem. This model is a valuable tool for ecologists, biologists, water quality modelers, and anyone involved in performing aquatic ecological risk assessments.

BASINS An environmental analysis system that integrates a GIS, national watershed data, and state-of-the-art environmental assessment and modeling tools into one package.

DFLOW A Windows-based tool developed to estimate user selected design stream flows for low flow analysis and water quality standards.

Mercury Maps   A tool that relates changes in mercury air deposition rates to changes in mercury fish tissue concentrations, on a national scale. Mercury Maps can be used to help identify those water bodies expected to attain state water quality standards as a result of air deposition reductions, or to assist in Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) analyses for individual or multiple watersheds.

Technical Tools

Ask WATERS Simple and expert query tools answer multi-program questions that draw on information from the databases linked through WATERS.

Surf Your Watershed Find a listing of organizations that are working to protect water quality in your watershed.

WARSSS A technical procedure developed by Dr. David L. Rosgen for water quality scientists to use in evaluating streams and rivers impaired by excess sediment.

Watershed Plan Builder Provides information and tools developed by EPA to assist with the development and implementation of effective watershed management plans.
