What do CAs do?

Community Associates (CAs) are graduate students who enjoy being involved with the Rains community. Their goal is to help build a sense of community among Rains residents. CAs:

  • Plan educational, cultural, social, and recreational programs at the neighborhood and Rains-wide levels.

  • Offer information and advice to anyone who needs help finding services or information on Stanford Campus.

  • Create opportunities for residents to take an active role in the organization of events.

Each building in Rains is part of a neighborhood served by at least two CAs. We have a lot of information about Stanford and the surrounding communities. We're available when you have specific questions and when you just want to talk.

Colleen Rosania

Hey everyone, and welcome to Rains! I'm Colleen and a CA for the best neighborhood of all, the Plains of Rains! I'm a sixth year Aeronautics & Astronautics PhD student here at Stanford specializing in structures and materials, specifically composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced polymers. Originally I hail from Alexandria, VA and I did my undergrad degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rochester in New York before coming to sunny and amazing Stanford. When not breaking things in lab (experiments are awesome!) I enjoy swimming, social dance, and watching or reading as much sci-fi as possible. I'm super excited to be a CA this year, meet all of you and run fantastic events!

Javier Stober

Hi! My name is Javier and I'm a 4th-year grad student in Aero/Astro Engineering. I had the good fortune of being a University of Florida Gator for undergrad, before coming out to the Bay Area. My academic background and interest is in all things propulsion, but I particularly fancy experimental hybrid rocket propulsion. Ask me about it, and our conversation will have no end. When not launching rockets, I thoroughly enjoy learning about different cultures, road-tripping aimlessly, and musical theater.

I'm super-psyched to be serving the Rains community as a CA and look forward to the opportunity of supporting Rainsians in any capacity. Don't hesitate to shoot me an email or stop me to say hello :)

John Taggart

Welcome to Rains! My name's John, and I'm a returning CA for the Beach House neighborhood. I’m originally from Atlanta, Georgia, but have lived in a variety of places around the US since. This will be my fourth year at Stanford, so if you’re new and have any questions about the place, don’t hesitate to ask. I’m in the department of Management Science & Engineering, working in energy economics and policy. In my free time (when there is any, and often when there isn't), you'll likely find me running the Dish, grilling outside for a potluck, playing ina pickup soccer game, or hiking up in the Santa Cruz mountains. I'm looking forward to seeing you at the awesome Rains events we've got in store for you this year, though if you have any suggestions for fun activities, just let me know!

Duncan Eddy

"Hey Rains! I’m Duncan and I am a third-year PhD student in Aero/Astro, and one of your two Head CAs. If there is any way we could do a better job, or you just want to see that XYZ event happen, please feel free to reach out to me.

I grew up in Boston and got my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rice down in Houston. In my free time I love perfecting new barbeque recipes, backcountry skiing, and voraciously reading pulp novels. I also love exploring San Francisco to discover cheap eats and aspiring bands. I can’t wait to meet everyone; so say hello, and always get in touch if you have questions or suggestions!"

Peyton Greenside

Hey everyone! My name is Peyton, and I'll be one of your CAs in Midtown. I'm a third year PhD student in Biomedical Informatics, which means I spend my time analyzing genomes to understand how disease arises. I grew up in North Carolina and then moved north and did my undergrad at Harvard in applied math. I also spent a year drinking tea and eating scones in England and a year working at a genomics research institute before coming to Stanford. Now I spend all of my free time going hiking, playing sports, and finding ways to travel to exciting places. Let me know if you have any fun ideas for events, and I look forward to getting to know you all this year!

Sarah Poole

Hi! My name is Sarah, and I'm very excited to be part of the Hilgard CA team! I grew up on a dairy farm in New Zealand, and I arrived at Stanford in 2013 to study towards a PhD in Biomedical Informatics. I have had a terrific time here so far, and have found some really cool activities in the area that I'm looking forward to sharing with you! I love the outdoors, and am always up for trying new activities, so if you have any ideas be sure to let me know!

Sam Corbett-Davies

Hey Rains! I'm Sam, one of your CAs for the Frontier. I'm from New Zealand - I grew up in the North Island and did my undergrad in Christchurch. I'm a third year PhD student in CS, studying computational social science. In my plentiful spare time I play field hockey, tennis, volleyball and soccer, sample California's fantastic beer and wine, and generally soak up US culture! Get in touch with me if you've got an idea for an event involving sun, sport or alcohol (in any combination), I'm always down to meet new people.

Blair Benham-Pyle

Hi Rains! I'm Blair, a 5th year PhD Candidate in Cancer Biology and one of the new Head CAs for the 2015-2016 academic year. I was born and raised in Woodbury, Minnesota, then moved out to the east coast for my undergraduate work. Outside of the lab, I like indoor and outdoor volleyball, dance parties, good books, and way too many TV shows. I love throwing events with free food (of course), good conversation, and exploration of new and exciting places around Stanford. Look forward to awesome events and don't hesitate to reach out with questions. Can't wait to get to know you this year!

Sabrina Papazian

Hey there, Rains! My name is Sabrina and I’m a third year PhD student in the Anthropology Department studying archaeological heritage management in Armenia. I am a native East coaster, born and raised in northern Virginia and spent my undergrad in the frigid tundra of upstate New York at Cornell University. After living a decent amount of time on the East coast, I crossed the pond to Cambridge, where I spent a year studying, rowing, and pretending I attended Hogwarts, before I ended up here at Stanford. If you don’t find me huddled up reading and writing in one of Stanford’s many libraries or outdoor cafes, you’ll find me biking, taking up a wild new PE class, throwing spontaneous dance parties, or finding new places to explore. I’m excited to be a CA this year but even more excited to meet new faces and welcoming you all to the Stanford graduate community. It is going to be a great year for sure!

Zach Zappala

Hey all, my name is Zach and I'm one of your Rains-wide CAs this year (but I live in the Frontier!). I'm a 4th year PhD student in the Genetics department, where I spend my days investigating the functional impact of genetic variation in humans. I was born in New York but raised and went to college in New Jersey, save a lovely stint in Tokyo. I enjoy doing pretty much anything and everything, but I particularly like cooking, playing sports, and spending (almost) all of my stipend money on concerts. I'm really excited to be a CA - I look forward to meeting all of you!

Julian Fitzgibbon

Rebecca Marton

Hi everyone! My name is Rebecca and I’m excited to be one of the new CAs in Frontier this year. I’m a second year PhD student in the Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine program. I’m originally from the Greater Boston area (go pats!) and went to undergrad at the University of Notre Dame (go irish!). When I’m not doing fun things with Rains, I spend most of my time trying to recreate aspects of human brain development using stem cells to study diseases such as autism and schizophrenia. My other hobbies including baking things that are obscenely bad for you and then running to make up for it. I’m really looking forward to my first year as a CA, and am open to any and all ideas you might have for events this year!

Michael Dubreuil

Well hey there you! I'm Mike and I am a CA for The Hood! I am in my third year of my PhD in Cancer Biology over at the School of Medicine. I was born and raised in the great state of New Hampshire and I am definitely enjoying the sunnier side of the US (especially after doing my undergraduate degree at not so sunny Cornell University). When I'm not studying oxidative stress in the lab, I like getting outdoors, adventuring in San Francisco, eating food, and a number of other eclectic activities. I'm super excited to continue my CA adventure this year and would love to hear from you if you have any questions/comments/concerns/conundrums/compliments so don't hesitate to shoot me an email or talk to me in person!

JY Lee

Hello hello! My name is Jun-youb (JY) Lee and I’m a second year master’s student in East Asian Studies. I grew up in Seoul, New Zealand, New Hampshire, and Philly before California, and spent my last summer in Hong Kong. I like to write, run, play (global) football, and play or listen to jazz. Gourmet ramen with craft beer make me merry. I don’t know what I’m writing my thesis on yet so let me know if you have ideas.

Gabriel Maher

Hey everyone! Welcome and congratulations on making it to Rains! My Name's Gabriel and I'm a second year PhD student at the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering. I'm originally from The Netherlands and did my undergrad in Aero/Astro at TU Delft. After that I worked as a software engineer at a startup, but then decided to trade the rainy Dutch weather for some California sun! In my free time I enjoy working on cool coding projects, tasting all of the world's beers, working out, socializing and partying and just exploring everything Stanford and the USA has to offer! I'm looking forward to organizing fun-filled events for everyone and hope you'll feel right at home here in Rains and at Stanford!

Alex Lin

Hi! I'm Alex Lin, and I'm a slowterm (2nd year coterm) in mechanical engineering, focusing on mechatronics and manufacturing. This is going to be my sixth year here on campus, and I absolutely love this place! I'm originally from Westerly, Rhode Island, and love anything that has to do with the ocean. In my free time, I love meeting new people and building cool things, ranging from guitar capos to a Badonkadonk Land Cruiser (google it). Hit me up if you have any ideas for awesome things to do (or make), and get psyched for an awesome year!

Juan Arias

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood! My name is Juan and I’m one of your CAs in Midtown. I am currently a second year PhD student in Developmental and Psychological Sciences in the School of Education. I was born in Colombia and grew up in Missouri (go Tigers!) before doing my undergrad in Neuroscience at Colorado College (go Tigers!). I spent a year in Scotland canoeing Lochs, heckling golfers, and getting a master’s degree at the University of St Andrews before arriving in this beautiful place. When I’m not reading, crunching numbers, or reading (or crunching numbers), you can find me throwing a frisbee, playing volleyball, cooking, rock climbing, salsa dancing, or exploring the urban and natural beauty that is California. I am always down to do those things with new friends, so never hesitate to contact me with ideas, questions, or just to vent. I’m so excited to be a CA and one of your Rains neighbors; it’s gonna be great!

Megan Dustin

Hey Rains! My name is Megan, and I'm super excited to be serving as a CA for the first time this year. I'm a second year PhD student in Geological Sciences and my focus is on geochemistry, specifically on contaminants and how they react with and are transported through the environment. I'm originally from Maryland, but before Stanford I was living in Indiana and attending Notre Dame. Even though I loved my time in undergrad (sorry guys, I'm always going to root for Notre Dame over Stanford in football), I'm SO happy to be living in a state with beautiful mountains and scenery now and you can often find me outside enjoying the California outdoors. Besides running, hiking, and other fun outdoor activities, I also love all types of music and am part of one of Stanford's concert choirs. I can't wait to meet you all and hear your ideas for events, I'm always up for trying something new or exploring new places!

Shaugnessy Brennan Brown

Welcome to Rains! My name is Shaughnessy, and I will be one of your CAs in Beach House this year. This is my second year of Stanford graduate school, and my research is in high energy density science, specifically laser-plasma interactions. In my free time, I consume unhealthy amounts of espresso and ice skate unreasonably quickly. These two phenomena often occur in temporal proximity. I am looking forward to meeting new residents, so please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Hamsika Chandrasekar

Hi everyone! My name is Hamsika, and I'm so excited to meet all of you at Rains. I was born in New Zealand and lived there for the first 10 years of my life, before I moved to Houston with my family and somehow - very sadly - lost my New Zealand accent along the way. I came to Stanford in 2013 to become a med student, and I'm now in my 3rd year (of 4 total), which has been crazy but awesome so far. I love reading, hiking, escaping campus for beach days, and more. Can't wait to hang out with you all!

Audrey Ho

Hey everyone! My name is Audrey and I'm a grad student in Electrical Engineering. I spent my undergrad years at Stanford as well and had such a good time I just couldn't leave yet. I love hiking, Marvel flicks, board games, pretending I know how to bake, and spontaneous dance parties. I also often randomly break into song. I'm stoked to be one of your CA's this year and can't wait to meet you all! Please don't hesitate to shoot me an email or stop by :)
