Grates on Mission Street to be replaced

Grates on Mission Street to be replaced

Construction is set to begin later this month to remove and replace nine street grates along Mission Street between 15th Street and Fair Avenue.

The grates have reached the end of their useful lives and create noise and travel hazards in their current state.  In order to provide easier access for BART Maintenance Crews and minimize noise to the local community, the steel grates, frames and concrete collars will be replaced with more robust features for an extended lifespan.

Contract work will begin in April for the survey and site investigation of the existing features.  Fabrication work of the steel grates and frames will be performed off-site and should last approximately 6-8 weeks.  Once complete, the installation work along Mission Street will commence, approximately in late Spring 2016.  All work will be performed between 8 pm and 6 am, Monday through Friday, with occasional work on weekends, as necessary. The work is anticipated to be completed by Fall 2016.

MUNI buses will remain in service along Mission Street during this project. Sidewalk and driveway access will be maintained at all times. In order to expedite work, street parking may be restricted while construction occurs on a single block.

We appreciate your understanding - and please excuse the light and noise - while we carry out this important work and build a Better BART.
