2012 Timeline of Activities

Program activities and dates for the 2012 California Teachers of the Year Program.
Activity
Date
Participating districts, charter schools, private schools, and professional organizations distribute local applications and organize local Teacher of the Year recognition activities. January 2011
County offices of education (COEs) conduct regional selection and recognition processes for district finalists. February 2011
Postmark deadline for COEs to submit state applications to the California Department of Education (CDE). September 2, 2011
The state selection committee - made up of teachers, administrators, and organization representatives - reviews applications. September 14-24, 2011
COEs are contacted to arrange site visits for selected applicants.

September 23-October 3, 2011

Site visits are conducted by a team of teacher-observers. October 2011
Selected applicants are interviewed by a state selection committee that includes the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or his designee. November 1-4, 2011
The State Superintendent of Public Instruction makes the final selection and personally notifies the California Teachers of the Year. November 2011
The Council of Chief State School Officers is notified of California's nominee for the National Teacher of the Year Program. November 2011
The CDE publicly announces the 2011 California Teachers of the Year in a news release. Late November 2011
California Teachers of the Year meet at the CDE for a professional development day and lunch with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. (Pending available funding) December 2011
California Teachers of the Year and additional honorees are honored at a special event. Spring 2012
