Educational Programs

The JMZ offers a full range of science experiences for children ages 3-10, including many “parent and me classes.” Current classes and registration information can be found in the Enjoy! Catalog.  Self-Guided Field Trips

School classes and other groups of 10 or more may visit us by calling (650) 329-2111 for a reservation. Fee: $5 per student. Teachers and adult chaperones are free.

Science Outreach for Schools

Throughout the school academic year, trained Museum educators bring a wide range of standards-based science programs into K-5 local elementary school classrooms. Programs can be tailored to complement core science instruction, or structured as stand-alone experiences for students. They may be offered in school classrooms or at the Museum.

Lessons typically last 50 minutes long and include hands-on encounters with live animals, natural artifacts and science tools and materials.

Prices per class range from $139 to $174 depending upon the number of classes purchased, and Palo Alto schools receive a modest discount.  For some locations, an extra transportation fee will be applied.

Teacher Resources

Thanks to a generous grant from the Cisco Foundation teachers who sign-up for Science Outreach programs can now extend their students' learning by completing suggested activities and discussions prior to our visits, and after we're gone. Parents and guardians may also support their children by engaging in suggested family activities at home.

Programs for Preschools classes and Community Groups

Community, neighborhood, family and scout groups may also take advantage of these unique educational opportunities by signing up for a Science Interpretive Program. Interpretives can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the group and can be delivered either at the Museum site or at an offsite location in your community. To register, please contact Alex Hamilton at alex.hamilton@cityofpaloalto.org or by calling

Photo Gallery of Educational Programs

Our programs use the Museum's extensive collection of natural history artifacts. Children can touch and observe these real specimens enhancing both their understanding of a subject and their sense of wonder.

Our zoo animals are a popular feature of our programs. Here an African hedgehog sniffs a young girl and her father to see if they will offer a mealworm treat.

In our programs, we provide the materials, projects, and expert science and nature educators for children to build and experiment to learn about different concepts. Above, two boys test their volcanoes.
