Overall Function: The Institutional Giving Writer will work with the IG team to prepare proposals, reports, briefings, letters of inquiry and other written materials intended to cultivate and secure funding from foundations and government funders for EDF’s programs.
Department and Location: This position is part of the Institutional Giving team within EDF’s Development Department. The Development Department raises 90% of EDF’s $175M+ budget annually; the Institutional Giving team is responsible for raising about half of the department’s revenue. This position location is flexible, preferably in EDF’s New York or Washington DC office.
Reporting: The IG Writer reports to the Director of Institutional Giving.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilizing exceptional writing and editing skills, draft compelling, high quality, polished documents (including, but not limited to, proposals, reports, briefings, letters of inquiry and summary documents) for foundation and government funders, drawing from multiple source documents and writers.
- Identify needs for new or revised materials, including assessing and resolving gaps in program content and framing.
- Interpret and follow institutional donors’ frameworks and requirements for articulation of EDF programs, particularly logic model/logframe and other program planning/design models.
- Manage document and process flow, ensuring deadlines are met with high-quality products.
- Communicate and collaborate extensively with development and program staff in carrying out tasks and responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with a preferred background in environmental studies/English/communications/political science or other relevant major.
- Minimum of five years’ demonstrated success in non-profit grant and report writing.
- Knowledge of environmental issues strongly preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and computer literacy.
- Ability to quickly grasp and translate complicated subject matter.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, working well with a wide range of colleagues across geographies.
- Excellent strategic thinking, planning, project management and organizational skills.
- Well-organized self-starter able to work as a strong team player as well as independently.
- An understanding of, and commitment to, Environmental Defense Fund's mission.
