ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Akash Modi captured three individual events and the all-around victory, but was unable to prevent Stanford from falling to Michigan in a matchup of top-five men’s gymnastics teams.

No. 5 Michigan edged No. 2 Stanford, 433.900-432.650, at Cliff Keen Arena on Saturday.

Modi won the parallel bars (15.300), rings (14.850), tied for first on the pommel horse (14.800), and was second on floor (15.200), third on the horizontal bar (14.800), and fourth on the vault (14.900). His total of 89.850 was 4.800 points better than all-around runner-up Dmitri Belanovski of Michigan.

Modi has recorded the highest scores in the all-around and parallel bars in all four meets this season.

Stanford (4-2) scored higher than the Wolverines (5-2) in pommel (70.550), rings (72.550) and parallel bars (72.650).

Modi has earned 14 individual event victories this season: all-around (4), parallel bars (3), floor (2), pommel horse (2), rings (2), and high bar (1).

Stanford also got victories from Brian Knott on the horizontal bar (14.900), and tied with Modi on the horse.

Sean Senters remained undefeated on the vault, scoring 15.200 to tie with Michigan’s Anthony Stefanelli.

Stanford fell behind in the first rotation, scoring 70.550 on the pommel horse to 74.400 for Michigan on floor. The Cardinal closed the gap throughout the meet, but was unable to work itself out of the initial hole.
