SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 3 Stanford lightweight rowing team opened up the 2015 racing season on Saturday with a pair of first place finishes at the San Diego Crew Classic.
It was business as usual for the Cardinal squad in America’s Finest City. The Crew Classic has become a place where Stanford wins on an annual basis. Coming into 2015, the Cardinal had won four straight lightweight eight titles.
The varsity eight entered the field filled with top-10 teams ranked one spot lower than No. 2 Boston University, but that would not be a deterrent to Stanford. The Cardinal crew topped the Terriers by just under two seconds with a time of 7:06.03 to claim the top lane for the Grand Finals on Sunday. T-No. 5 Princeton was just 0.25 seconds behind Boston while there was a large separation from the rest of the pack.
Sunday’s lightweight eight Grand Final will take place at 11:56 a.m. as Stanford goes for its fifth consecutive title.
The 2V8 for the Cardinal was entered as the only lightweight team in the women’s open event. Two teams scratched from the field, UCLA and USD, leaving only three boats in the first heat. Stanford pulled far away from the field, winning by over 23 seconds with a time of 7:33.15. British Columbia came in second and San Diego State third. Stanford advances to the Grand Final at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
