SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 3 Stanford lightweight rowing team won its fifth straight lightweight eight championship at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday.
For the second straight day the Cardinal finished atop a field of top 10 teams. Boston University, ranked No. 2 in the country, was the closest to the Stanford boat at just under four seconds back.
The Cardinal clocked a winning time of 7:05.44. T-No. 5 Princeton came in third at just over seven seconds behind Stanford.
The victory in the women’s collegiate lightweight Grand Final gave Stanford the A.W. Coggeshall Cup, the fifth straight season the trophy has called Stanford, Calif. home.
The 2V8 was the only lightweight boat in the Grand Final of the women’s open event. The Cardinal won the prelims race and put forth another strong race on Sunday, but fell short to the University of Texas openweights. Stanford posted a time of 7:07.25 for second place, over five seconds ahead of third place USC.
Stanford will have three weeks until its next competition. The Cardinal will travel to Boston, Mass. To race against Harvard, Wisconsin, Boston University and MIT on the Charles River April 18-19.
