STANFORD, Calif. -- Andrew Summerville and Keith Weisenberg combined to take a no-hitter to the ninth inning in a 7-2 win over Pacific Tuesday evening at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The freshmen pitchers helped the Cardinal snap a four-game losing streak by almost throwing the program’s first no-hitter since 1998.
Summerville (2-0) took care of the first five innings without surrendering a hit, before Weisenberg shutdown the visiting Tigers over the next three frames. Pinch hitter Justin Thaxton ended the bid with a single through the right side after a leadoff walk to start the ninth.
Stanford (12-18) gave Summerville six early runs of support to cruise to the nonconference victory. The Cardinal scored one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to open a 6-0 lead as part of its best offensive game since March 23.
Despite holding a 6-0 lead with a no-hitter intact, pulling Summerville was an easy decision for the Cardinal coaching staff. The freshman lefty had thrown 84 pitches, the most he has thrown all season, over 5.0 innings. Summerville entered Tuesday with 4.0 innings pitched in six appearances.
Thaxton’s single off the freshman righty Weisenberg, who tied his longest outing, kept Chad Hutchinson’s five-inning no-no on Feb. 1, 1998 as the last in Stanford history. Weisenberg earned a four-inning save, the first of his career.
Junior shortstop Drew Jackson led the offense with three hits, while sophomore second baseman Tommy Edman and junior right fielder Zach Hoffpauir each added two. Freshman first baseman Matt Winaker, one of six Cardinal players with an RBI, drove home two on a single in the third for his second straight multi-RBI game.
Bryce Carter lifted his first career home run in the sixth.
Pacific (7-24) rallied for two runs in the ninth. JP Yakel ended a shot at a one-hitter with an RBI bloop single to right center and pinch hitter Jimmy Gosano drove in a run with a bases-loaded groundout.
Stanford has two days off before traveling to Berkeley Friday night. Rivals California and Stanford play a three-game series Friday-Sunday with all three airing on Pac-12 Bay Area.
