STANFORD, Calif. – The Cardinal sand volleyball team opened the Stanford Invitational with a 3-2 win over Oregon, Friday, at Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium. The Cardinal improves to 6-3 overall, while the Ducks drop to 0-2.
Oregon led 2-1 after the first round of matches, played by the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 pairs. Stanford’s No. 3 team of Jordan Burgess and Merete Lutz put the Cardinal on the board with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Taylor Agost and Maggie Scott.
The Cardinal’s No. 1 pair, Lauren Birks and Brittany Howard, tied the match with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Oregon’s Shellsy Ashen and Kacey Nady.
Stanford’s Madi Bugg and Ivana Vanjak, playing at No. 2, clinched the win for the Cardinal with a come-from-behind 21-23, 21-11, 16-14 over Liz Brenner and Chelsey Keoho.
No. 8 UCLA, Washington and Saint Mary’s also picked up wins on the first day of the Stanford Invitational.
The Stanford Invitational continues on Saturday, April 11 at the Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium and the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation courts. Stanford will take on No. 8 UCLA at 9 a.m. and Cal Poly at 3 p.m. PT at the stadium.
