STANFORD, Calif. – The Cardinal sand volleyball team went 1-1, Saturday, at the Stanford Invitational with a 4-1 win over Cal Poly and a 4-1 loss to eighth-ranked UCLA at Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium. The Cardinal now sits at 7-4 overall.
The Cardinal opened the day against the Bruins, falling into an 0-2 hole after the No. 4 and No. 5 pairs competed. UCLA’s No. 4 team of Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye defeated Kelsey Humphreys and Catherine Raquel in straight sets. Stanford’s No. 5 team of Inky Ajanaku and Grace Kennedy won their opening set against UCLA’s Lexi Jasper-Baylin and Ivey Schmitt, 21-17, but dropped the final two, including a tough 16-14 decision in the third.
Stanford’s No. 3 pair, Jordan Burgess and Merete Lutz, put the Cardinal on the board with a hard-fought 23-21, 18-21, 15-13 win over Julie Consani and Laurel Weaver.
UCLA sealed the victory with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The Cardinal’s top team of Lauren Birks and Brittany Howard won the first set against Zoe Nightingale and Kamila Tan, 21-11, but yielded the next two sets to the Bruins. At No. 2, Stanford’s Madi Bugg and Ivana Vanjak fell in straight sets to Madie Smith and Elise Zappia.
Stanford rebounded with a 4-1 win over Cal Poly in the afternoon. Bugg and Vanjak clinched the win at No. 2 with a 21-19, 10-21, 15-9 win over Nicole Kessler and Caihla Petiprin.
Ajanaku and Kennedy made quick work of Shannon Fouts and Casey Carroll, winning 21-10, 21-14 at No. 5. Humphreys and Raquel pulled out a 13-21, 21-15, 15-9 victory over Katie Conroy and Hannah Schleis.
Burgess and Lutz picked up their second win of the day, defeating Anna Gorma and Taylor Gruenewald, 21-17, 21-13 at No. 3.
The Stanford Invitational wraps-up with a pairs tournament on Sunday, April 12. Action begins at 8:30 a.m. PT at Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium and the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation courts.
