NEWPORT, R.I. - Stanford’s depth was on full display today, earning a spot in the finals of the Gill Coed Sailing Nationals. Already having secured ninth place in the Sperry Women’s Nationals and third in the Laserperformance Team Race Nationals, the Cardinal has an excellent chance for another terrific finish.

Over 30 semifinal races, fifth-ranked Stanford finished second in one of two 18-team fields. The top nine schools from each half punched tickets to the finals, set to take place tomorrow and Thursday.

In all, eight Stanford sailors participated in the semifinals. In the A-division, decorated seniors Kieran Chung and Hans Henken shared skipper duties. Senior Haley Kirk, junior Sammy Steele, and sophomore John Cannistraro all pitched in as crews for third place in the division.

Stanford’s B-unit highlighted the semifinals, beating top-ranked Yale by one point en route to first place in the division. Skipper duties went to juniors Antoine Screve and Axel Sly, with juniors Daniel Ron and Cannistraro serving as crews. Cannistraro was on the water for 11 races, the most of any Cardinal sailor, and the only to sail in both divisions.

The championship round of the Gill Coed Nationals begins tomorrow morning and concludes Thursday afternoon. Live scoring of the event will be available at scores.collegesailing.org
