Lacrosse: The Season That Was

STANFORD, Calif. – The nation’s highest scoring team came from Stanford. The Cardinal led the nation in draw controls too.

Though the season ended much too soon, with an NCAA first-round loss to Florida in a tough first-round draw, the Stanford women’s lacrosse team took another step toward national prominence.

Scoring was bound to be a strength. After all, Stanford returned its top seven goal-scorers and 92 percent of its goals from the 2014 season. By the end of the season, 11 players scored 10 or more goals. Stanford scored 288 altogether, averaging a national-leading 16.00.

The key, however, was its ability to win the draw. Some mid-season adjustments resulted in a great synergy between freshman Kelly Myers and junior Lucy Dikeou and Stanford really took off after that, even with the loss of early-season scoring leader Kelsey Murray to an injury.

Other than a 16-14 victory at Colorado, no other team came within five goals of Stanford in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season or tournament play. That stretch ended with a 16-11 victory over USC in the MPSF championship game.

Dikeou proved to be one of the best all-around players in the country, scoring 48 goals and setting a school season record in draw controls with 64. In fact, Dikeou led the team in goals (48), points (63), groundballs (34), draw controls (64), caused turnovers (24), and free-position goals (13.).

Stanford finished 15-3, tying for the fewest losses in school history, and will return eight starters. As exceptional as this season was for Stanford, the future looks even more promising.

Below are this year’s achievements and honors for the team and players:
